Is It Time to Add a Freezer to Your Garage?

For most of us, the garage ends up being used as storage space. Holiday decorations war with yard tools and bric-a-brac from high school that we’ll never take out of the box but just can’t seem to part with. In short, there’s a lot of wasted space, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

There are plenty of ways that you can revolutionize how you use the space in your garage. The first step is to clean it out and get rid of the junk.

That lacrosse gear you haven’t used since college? Donate it. The boxes of yard signs and door hangers you never put out? Get rid of them. Once you’ve made some space, you can begin putting the area to better use. One option is to install a freezer in the garage.

Is a Garage Freezer Right for You?

Should you really add a freezer to your garage? It could be a great idea and can offer a lot of pluses.

Reduce Store Trips – How much time and gas do you spend going back and forth to the store? A garage freezer reduces those dramatically.

Bulk Up – Do you use food products regularly? Why not buy in bulk? A freezer in your garage can be a great way to store bulk items so they don’t spoil.

Meal Prep Simplified – Thinking about getting into meal prep but put off by your lack of freezer space? Adding a freezer to your garage eliminates that problem completely.

Hunt and Fish – Do you hunt? Fish? Raise your own livestock? If so, a garage freezer is a no-brainer.

The benefits outlined above are just some of the reasons to consider adding a freezer in the garage in 2021. Of course, there’s the initial cost, but you’ll find that it can quickly pay for itself.

Garage Freezer Styles and Types

Sold on the idea of putting a freezer in your garage? That’s great. Now you need to decide which one is right for you. You’ll find a ton of different options, from different freezer styles and brands. Do you want to consider upright freezers? Prefer a freezer chest or a portable freezer? It’s not just style, though. How much do you want to store? Capacity/size is a major consideration that will affect price, but also the footprint of the freezer in your garage.

Uprights

An upright freezer looks more like a refrigerator, but usually only has one door and the interior is completely given over to freezer space. You’ll find lots of shelves and even door racks to help you store things. In terms of finish, there are lots of options available.

Chest Freezers

Chest freezers are square or rectangular and are usually wider than they are tall (but you’ll find some tall, narrow options for tight spaces). Chest freezers usually only have a minimum of dividers and baskets to organize your items. There are lots of finish options, though.

Don’t have much free space for a freezer? No worries. There are portable, compact, dorm-style, and other types of freezers that might suit your needs. However, keep in mind that the smaller the freezer, the less space you have for food.

However, there’s more to owning a garage freezer than just choosing the right brand and style. You also need to keep it in good shape.

Moving a freezer into your garage is just one step. Once it’s there, you need to ensure that you’re able to maintain it correctly. Thankfully, there’s not a lot that you need to do. For most freezers, you just need to defrost and clean the interior once per year. Note that if ice builds up inside the freezer to more than one-quarter inch thick, you’ll need to defrost it more often.

As you can see from our discussion, adding a freezer to your garage is a great idea. However, there are some challenges. That’s particularly true of your garage door. If the garage door is in bad shape, it can lead to major problems, like the freezer working overtime to keep the contents frozen, and even the formation of rust on the freezer due to condensation.

An R16 insulated garage door is critical – the higher the R-Value of the door, the more insulated and weatherproof it is.

If your garage door is old and hasn’t aged well, it’s worth investigating the weatherstripping. Damaged weatherstripping lets air in and out, but also allows moisture to enter the garage.

Of course, you shouldn’t buy just any garage door. Put some thought into your purchase. It should be high-quality, well-insulated, and aesthetically pleasing. Study the various options to find a door that fits your needs, budget, and home aesthetic.
